Here at Illinois State, we have generally allocated our funds for our
approval plan by subject. It has been suggested that we not do this, but
simply have a large sum available for approval purchases. We have also
routinely considered approval slip requests as part of the approval budget,
not the firm order budget. What is the practice in other university
libraries? What are the pros and cons of allocating by subject/department
versus having a general fund for approval?
