JOB TITLE: Director of Collections and Technical Services
DEPT.:     Library
STATUS:    Full-time

Director of Collections and Technical Services.  The Bowdoin
College
Library seeks an experienced, dynamic Director of
Collections and
Technical Services to lead our Technical Services
Department,
coordinate library collection management operations, and
co-direct the
collection preservation efforts.  This re-defined position
reflects our
library's emphasis on service and a commitment to the
support of the
curriculum and faculty teaching and research. The Director,
who reports
to the Librarian of the College, participates in library
planning
activities, policy development, resource allocation and
program
implementation as a member of the library management team.

Collections comprise over 900,000 volumes, 2000 current
periodical
subscriptions, 5000 videorecordings, and numerous electronic
resources,
and the Library is a selective federal documents depository.
The Library
is committed to cooperative resource development with its
consortial
partners Colby and Bates Colleges.

Responsibilities: The Director of Collections and Technical
Services is
responsible for: coordinating Library collection development
including
selection of materials, evaluation of collections and
license
negotiations; ensuring that library collections meet
curricular support
and faculty research needs; directing the activities of the
collection
development management team; with the Director of Special
Collections
and Archives, overseeing planning and implementation of
library-wide
preservation initiatives; and managing the Technical
Services
Department. All librarians share reference desk
responsibilities and
academic department liaison assignments, involving extensive
contact
with library staff, faculty members, college administrators
and
students.  Serve as a library contact with vendors and
networks;
represent Technical Services on consortial committees; work
as member of
the library management team on planning and policy
development;
coordinate financial planning related to Nelinet/OCLC and
related
services; and prepare and analyze financial and statistical
data
relevant to library collections and technical services
operations.

Required qualifications: 
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school;
minimum five
years work experience with collection development; work
experience with
technical services operations and evidence of increasing
managerial
responsibility; demonstrated record of leadership and
achievement in
planning and coordinating collection management operations;
strong
knowledge of all aspects of technical services management;
knowledge of
current trends in collection management, including print,
multimedia and
electronic materials; and experience with applications of
technology to
collection management and technical services practices,
including
integrated library systems, bibliographic utilities and MARC
format, the
World Wide Web and other digital access technologies;
knowledge of
conservation/preservation issues and practices preferred.

Candidates must possess: strong service orientation,
initiative and
flexibility, and a commitment to professional growth;
ability to work
effectively with faculty, staff, and students; outstanding
supervisory
skills; enthusiasm for working in a technical services team
setting,
which emphasizes cross-training and shared decision-making;
understanding of broad library issues and interest in
effecting change
in an automated environment; strong written and oral
communication
skills; and experience with personnel and project
management.
