Librarian III or Librarian IV, Position No. 84097, Head of
Collection
Services Division, full-time, tenure track, general funds,
available
January 2000.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the University Librarian,
the Head of the
Collection Services Division provides professional
leadership, creative
direction, coordination and supervision for the Division,
which consists
of the Acquisitions, Cataloging, Serials and Preservation
Departments,
with 11 FTE in library faculty and 38 FTE in support staff.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the
following:
o coordinate library activities related to acquiring library
materials and
providing intellectual access to them through the librarys
catalog or
website;
o direct the activities of the Acquisitions, Cataloging,
Serials and
Preservation departments to ensure optimum use of the
resources
available to them;
o convene and work collegially with the Collection Services
Heads Group
o provide vision and leadership in developing the Divisions
and the
Library's strategic planning process;
o recommend individuals to serve as Heads of the various
Collection
Services departments;
o work with the Library's Systems and Desktop Network
Services staff and
the library system vendor to ensure the most efficient and
effective use
of the existing online system;
o provide leadership and input into implementation of the
librarys next
online library management system;
o maintain and participate in contract negotiations with
vendors,
licensors and data aggregators,
o keep the library abreast of developments in the rapidly
changing world
collection service activities and technologies;
o serve as a member of the Librarys administrative group and
participate
in management of the UHM Library.
Minimum Qualifications:
At Rank of Librarian III: ALA accredited MLS or equivalent;
at least three
years of experience in technical services in an
academic/research library;
and 24 post baccalaureate credits in addition to the MLS.
At Rank of
Librarian IV: MLS, 2nd Masters degree in a subject area and
at least seven
years of experience working in technical services areas.

o Successful experience managing a technical services area
in a University
library;
o strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with
colleagues, mentor
and manage library staff;
o experience using computer applications for processing
library materials
o previous experience implementing an online library
management system;
o ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously;
o ability to work both independently and collegially in a
rapidly
changing environment,
o evidence of initiative and flexibility
o experience in a strategic planning process;
o demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and active
participation
in the library profession;
o demonstrated ability to manage personnel and budget
resources;
o experience in analyzing work flow;
o familiarity with the process of migrating data between
library systems;
o experience creating databases and spreadsheets for
analyzing data;
o experience negotiating contracts and licenses with
vendors;
o experience writing reports and grant applications
o demonstrated commitment to diversity.
Salary Range: Librarian III: $38,964-57,672; Librarian IV:
$47,400-70,164.
Benefits: Include vacation and sick leave accumulated at 14
hours per
month each, 13 paid holidays, choice of group medical
insurance and state
retirement benefits which are vested after 10 years of
service.
Librarians are represented by a faculty-wide, exclusive
bargaining agent,
the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly.
THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Hawaii at Manoa is the
major research
campus of the University of Hawaii system. It is a land,
sea and space
grant institution with an enrollment of 17,500 students.
Doctorates are
granted in 49 fields. The University of Hawaii Library has
a staff of 137
full time employees and a collection of 2.9 million
volumes. It is a
member of ARL and RLG. It uses OCLC and RLIN as
bibliographic resources
and has implemented CARL automated software for all public
catalog and
processing functions. It is currently undergoing a major
review of
integrated library management systems.
