AGGRAVATING OR AGGREGATING? PROVIDING EFFFECTIVE ACCESS
TO CONTENTS OFAGGREGATOR DATABASES

Saturday, June 26, 1999
9:30 -- 12:30
Chateau Sonesta, Laffite A

Our speakers at this program include:

John Riemer, Head of Cataloging, University of Georgia and Chair of the
CONSER Task Group on Access to Serials in Aggregators. John will talk
about a survey done by his group on feasibility and ease of providing title
access and need for title access.

Scott Dennis, Chair of Electronic Resources Team, University of
Michigan. Scott will talk about the public services/collection development
perspective on providing access to contents of aggregator databases.

Diane Smith, Senior Director of Marketing, CIS/LEXIS/NEXIS. Diane will talk
about the issues that aggregators have both in the development of
databases and regarding access to these databases. We have
emphasized issues such as how a vendor puts a product
together and what are the considerations of the vendor. What control
does the vendor have over their products? What are the copyright
issues and how do they affect access issues? How does content
affect licensing agreements? What pressures do vendors have?

Dilys Morris, Assistant Director for Technical Services, Iowa State
University. Dilys will speak from the perspective of a Head of Technical
Services who has to manage the resources to create access to the
contents of aggregator databases and work with public
service/collection development/web masters on access issues.

Chuck Hamaker, Head, Technical Services, University of North Carolina,
Charlotte. Chuck will talk about the philosophical justification for making
our catalog links to sources that are important rather than linking to
anything and everything.
