DESCRIPTION: Virginia Commonwealth University seeks an enthusiastic and
future-oriented individual to work a split position in Reference Services
(60%) and in Collection Management (40%). This is a faculty position that
reports to the Reference Department co-team leaders with evaluation input
from the Head of Collection Management. In Reference, the incumbent will
provide both general reference service and comprehensive, specialized
reference service to students, faculty, and staff in areas of business and
law; teach library instruction sessions for undergraduate and graduate
students; prepare instructional and promotional materials and web-based
subject guides; and contribute to the development and management of the
Reference Collection. Some evening and weekend reference desk service
rotation is required. In Collection Management, the incumbent will develop,
manage and promote business, criminal justice and public administration
collections in all formats including monograph, serial, nonprint, and
electronic materials. Responsibilities include serving as liaison to
faculty and students in the areas listed, providing them with
subject-specific user education and ensuring effective communication;
evaluating electronic resources; preparing curriculum reports; and
monitoring allocated funds, continuing commitments and approval plans. As a
member of the Reference Services department (6.5 FTE) in the Academic User
Services division, s/he will participate in service provision in a team
environment that encourages open decision making and consultative
management.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: ALA-accredited MLS Preferred: knowledge of and
experience in using business and legal resources; knowledge of print and
electronic reference resources; excellent written and oral communication
skills; demonstrated flexibility and initiative; strong commitment to public
service and information literacy; understanding of the concerns of a
research library and its users; positive interpersonal skills with ability
to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and community members;
demonstrated analytical and organizational skills. Also preferred are one or
more years reference experience in an academic library; academic background
in business and /or law with advanced degree desired; strong computer skills
and experience with web page creation. Involvement in professional
activities and the ability to meet requirements for faculty advancement
including professional service and publication are expected. Experience
working in a culturally diverse environment preferred.
ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University (http://www.vcu.edu) is a
Carnegie 1 urban, research university in Richmond, Virginia, with 22,700
students and 1,560 faculty on the Academic Campus and on the Medical College
of Virginia Campus. The University is ranked 87th in federally sponsored

Information Technology and provides library services for both campuses.
University Library Services is a member of the Association of Southeast
Research Libraries, the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, the
Center for Research Libraries and the Virtual Library of Virginia. The
libraries hold 1.5 million cataloged volumes, 10,000 serial subscriptions,
over 2.8 million microforms, and 260,000 government documents. The $9.5
million budget includes $4.7 million for collections and supports 36 faculty
librarians and 100 staff. The library uses NOTIS and is at the forefront of
implementing the IBM Digital Library on campus. The two library buildings
have 170 public workstations, as well as hosting several computing
laboratories.
SALARY: $32,000 minimum. Benefits include 24 vacation days, choice of health
