DESCRIPTION OF UNITS:

The Bibliographers Group is composed of subject and language specialists
who develop and
manage library collections for the Young Research Library, UCLAís graduate
library for the
humanities and social sciences. Bibliographers work closely with selectors
From other UCLA
Library units to coordinate collection building and with staff of  the
Acquisitions and
Serials departments to facilitate the processing of materials. In addition
to selection and
management responsibilities for the collections, bibliographers serve as
liaisons to academic
departments and provide library instruction in their areas of expertise.

The Cataloging Department, located in the Young Research Library, is the
largest of the seven
cataloging centers in the UCLA Library system. Within the Department, the
Monographic and
Serial Cataloging Sections are responsible for cataloging titles in print,
microform and
electronic formats for all roman and non-roman alphabet languages,
excluding CJK. The
Department participates actively in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging,
submitting records
to NACO, BIBCO, SACO, and CONSER. Cataloging is done in accordance with
AACR2, LCRI, LCSH, and
the Library of Congress classification schedules.


DUTIES:

Under the general supervision of the Head of the Bibliographers Group and
with work assigned
by the Head of YRL Cataloging, the  South East Asian
Bibliographer/Cataloger is responsible
for developing, managing, and cataloging the vernacular and Western
language collections in
the humanities and social sciences pertaining to South East Asia. Countries
of emphasis are
Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Responsibilities
include: selecting library
materials, managing funds,  monitoring approval plans,  making preservation
and weeding
decisions, developing and maintaining working relationships with publishers
and vendors,
working closely with faculty and graduate students, including  providing
consultation services
and library instruction, cataloging of library materials in all the above
mentioned languages
as well  as Western languages, using the MARC formats, AACR2, LCRI, LCSH
and Library of
Congress classification schedules, and training and supervision of
paraprofessional and
student staff as necessary. Like all professional librarians at UCLA, the
incumbent is
expected to contribute to general Library and University service, and is
encouraged to be
active within the profession.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  Graduate-level study, or equivalent experience, in the
humanities or social sciences
relating to South East Asia. Command of at least one of the following
languages: Indonesian,
Tagalog, Thai, or Vietnamese. Knowledge of  the literature and history of
South East Asia. A
thorough understanding of research needs and the organization of scholarly
literature. Ability
to work well in a changing environment within a large organization,
demonstrating flexibility,
initiative and creativity. Excellent English communication and
interpersonal skills and
ability to work with staff, students, and faculty of culturally diverse
backgrounds.
Commitment to professional development and service.

Preferred:  Experience in collection development and management or in
cataloging in an academic
library. Thorough knowledge of the USMARC formats. Knowledge of/experience
with AACR2, LCRI,
authority work, LCSH, and Library of Congress classification. Experience
with a bibliographic
utility, preferably OCLC. Command of either Indonesian or Vietnamese and a
reading knowledge
of one of the other three vernacular languages. Reading knowledge of Dutch
or French.
