In our library, we have requests for additional books that are "easy to
read," specifically for adult ESL students at intermediate to advanced
levels. I would like to purchase books in two categories:

1.	High interest - low reading level books written or adapted for
these students;
2.	Authentic, unadapted literature that uses relatively uncomplicated
language.

If you've put together a collection like this, could you share some
favorite publishers, booklists, or other resources? If there is interest,
I will
share with the list.

Thank you!

Mary Ann

We have purchased several different collections suitable for adult
learners and ESL students.

I recently purchased some of the Penguin Readers series (published by
Penguin Books), which is a collection of simplified authentic novels, film
novelizations, and original titles.
They are graded in six levels, from beginner (300
words, 24 pages) to advanced (3000 words, 96 pages). Since they are aimed
at not only adult literacy or ESL students, but also younger readers,
there are a variety of titles, ranging from "Babe" and "The
Secret Garden" to adaptations of Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen, and Robert
Louis Stevenson. There are many fairly recent novels as well (John Grisham,
Elmore Leanard, etc). I also find these titles to be more attractive
looking than other collections for adult learners.

The Literacy Volunteers of America (1-800-LVA-8812) produces the New
Writers' Voices series, which are written by new adult readers, as well as
the Writers' Voices series, which are adapted popular works (The Joy
Luck Club, Dazzel, Jaws...).

We also find read-along collections to be popular (audio cassettes with
word-for-word read-along texts). Audio-Forum publishes these
(1-800-243-1234). They tend to have classic titles (Moby Dick, WUthering
Heights...). Cambridge publishes the Pacemaker Classics series, and you
have the option of purchasing the cassette to go along with the book.
