We're looking at starting a circulating cd-rom collections with some
general interest cd-roms in the $50 price range. I've been checking library
supply catalogs for cd security strips and storage boxes.
We'd like to hear from libraries that have done this already. Some of
the concerns that staff have include:
1)technical support issues--we really just want to circulate them
like videos and not be helping students load them on their own
pcs.
2)Do we integrate them into the collection or carve out separate
real estate? We're talking about puting the packages on the shelf
like we do with our video boxes and keeping the actual cds in
jewel cases behind circulation.
3)Does anyone have a collection development policy that includes
a circulating cd-rom collection?
We'd appreciate any information from libraries who have been doing this
for a while. I'd be happy to collect the information we receive and
forward to anyone else on the list who's interested.
Thanks in advance.

Try this article--Multimedia to Go by Greg W. Lubelski in Library
Journal Feb. 1, 1995, p. 37. It is about circulating CD-ROMs and goes
into great detail. It's a little old now, but has valuable info on
issues to consider, packaging, etc. If you want updated information,

Our library tried putting some of our less-used CDs in Reserves, but that
did not work well. Student employees always looked blank when asked for
something not neatly categorized by course number & instructor's name. We
are about to transfer these to Audio Visual, which already has the
software which comes with books (esp. in computer science) and some other
CDs we decided not to network. AV is better able to control varying
formats and to service them. We have assigned different circulation
status codes to different CDs, some circulating & some for use "in the
building." This varies with both price and difficulty in using.

We currently have 378 CD-ROM disks in our collection -- all of them as
supplements to books in our book collection. We have avoided purchasing
CD-ROM only software packages. We check out the disks that come with the
books, since we currently don't have CD-ROM computers for student use. We
depend on students to use them in a lab on campus or their home computer if
they have one. The CD's are cataloged as a separate item attached to the
bib record with a separate barcode. CD's are kept in a file at the
circulation desk and there is a note on the cover of the book indicating
"Ask at circulation desk for computer disk".
We also have a CD-ROM network for reference databases which are networked
out to all computers in all 4 of our campus libraries and soon will be
networked to all computers at the college.

We put the CD-ROMs in boxes (like videos) and shelve with the books. I
think this is O.K., especially since so many of them come with books. I
don't think we have a technical support issue.
