POSITION TITLE:	Associate University Librarian for Collection
Development

Syracuse University Library invites applications and nominations for
the position of Associate University Librarian for Collection
Development.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
This senior position, reporting to the University Librarian, includes
responsibility for a $3.5m collections budget and related activities,
and shared responsibility for the administration of the Library.  The
incumbent will lead, supervise in their selection activities, and
participate in evaluating up to 30 selectors throughout the Library.
Assertive advancement of digital initiatives will be as important as
maintenance of print and other materials acquisitions.   The continued
development of effective consortial relationships will be essential.
The incumbent will have an opportunity to restructure the collections
organization to increase effectiveness and achieve these goals.

The Associate University Librarian will enhance liaisons with academic
schools and departments and work with faculty and administrators to
determine selective areas of excellence and growth, to be reflected in
the Library's collecting patterns.   He or she will also serve on the
Administrative Committee and, with department heads and other
administrators, on the Cabinet.   Depending on the capabilities and
skills of the incumbent and the needs of the Library, specific
operational responsibilities may be assigned.

The Library will particularly appreciate candidates with the ability
to mentor and develop subject selectors, tolerance for ambiguity, a
sense of humor, and patience within an action orientation.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
· a graduate degree in librarianship/information studies
(ALA-accredited) or equivalent; · five years of progressively
increasing responsibility in a large academic or research library
environment; · experience managing collections or electronic resources
in a research or academic library for several years; · commitment to
diversity in the workplace; · ability to work effectively across
organizational boundaries and to lead effective teams to joint
accomplishment; · effective interpersonal, oral, and written
communication skills.

The Library seeks to appoint a candidate who has the best mix of the
following demonstrable qualifications:

Experience in or with:
· budget management;
· space planning;
· formulating and implementing policies;
· supervising, leading and evaluating staff;
· successfully reorganizing operational units;
· the book trade;
· computing technologies, including spreadsheets, word processing, and
file transfer; · subject specialization, e.g. publication or an
additional graduate degree; · a notable professional record or
national reputation;

Skills:
· leadership ability;
· ability to work successfully with library selectors;
· analytic, problem solving and planning skills;
· understanding of licensing issues for information resources;
· knowledge of digital library applications and networked information
resources;
· able to complete tasks in a timely manner;
· ability to work effectively with faculty in collection development;
· ability to work effectively with local, regional and national
resource sharing bodies;
 · ability to articulate the importance of a
research collection reflecting both traditional and digital formats;
· an understanding and appreciation of the importance of preserving
the human record;
· broad understanding of the evolving role of the
library in a student-centered research university; how technology
affects academic institutions; how libraries can aid teaching and
learning;
· understanding of copyright issues as they affect scholarly
communication;

ENVIRONMENT:  Syracuse University is an independent Research II
University founded in 1870 and is a member of the Association of
American Universities.  Its thirteen schools and colleges, with 800
faculty, enroll over 12,000 undergraduate and 5,600 graduate and law
students. The Library is a member of the Association of Research
Libraries, the Research Libraries Group, OCLC, and other national and
regional consortia.  Syracuse holdings approximate 3 million volumes.
Its online system is Endeavor's Voyager.  The Library is committed to
developing digital resources and providing excellence in service. We
are about to take important steps to encompass digital as well as
print information provision, including the transformation of space and
services in a building now housing science and technology resources.


The beautiful residential main campus occupies approximately two
hundred acres on a hilltop just east of downtown Syracuse.  A number
of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.  The
city of Syracuse is situated in the rolling hills of upstate New York,
280 miles northwest of New York City,  to the south of Lake Ontario
between the Finger Lakes and the Adirondack Mountains. Cultural
opportunities abound: we are the smallest city in the nation to host a
major symphony orchestra; we are the home of a nationally recognized
art museum, the Everson; and we enjoy the offerings of a number of
performing arts companies, including Syracuse Stage, an outstanding
Equity theater.

SALARY & BENEFITS: Commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum: $73,000. The University provides a generous benefits package,
including TIAA/CREF (11% University contribution), health and dental
