I am writing to find out how other institutions handle the question of
language ability among the bibliographic searching and copy cataloging
staff. I am sure there is great variety, and your practices will be
helpful to me. Is fluency in another language (ability to search in
Japanese, for example) paid a premium? Are the job descriptions and/or
levels any different for those library staff (non-bibliographers) who
must work efficiently in a language other than English, particularly a
non-Roman language? The positions here at Duke into which these very
valuable people fall are unfortunately, within the university system, at
a level that does not require a college degree, even though the work is
sophisticated and linguistically challenging. I would be interested to
know what is done in other libraries.

Thanks,
Deborah
