I'm working on a project to "backfill" our monograph collection for a newly
formed Department of Computer Science. Given the volatility of the
discipline, does there exist a list of classic or core works?
If you have suggestions for identifying worthy titles in computer science for
retrespective purchase, please respond directly to me at the address below.
Thanks

A couple of months ago I asked if there is a list of core or classic
monographs in computer science outside of the obvious but outdated BOOKS
FOR COLLEGE LIBRARIES. A number of people asked me to post the results
to CD-L, so here we go.
No published bibliographies were suggested. However, Gene Weimers at
Bates College suggested that I look at the QA 76's in their online
catalog, as they have a small but excellent collection in computer
science (I did, and it its; thanks, Gene). The URL for the catalog is:

Our approval plan vendor, Yankee Book Peddler, provided a list of "best
sellers" in computer science from the last couple of years, with content
level, which enabled me to ignore the latest Idiot's Guides. I also
checked back years of CHOICE reviews.
While these strategies are certainly not comprehensive, they were quick
and easy, and I am satisfied that the titles wer are acquiring are
worthy.
