Midwinter Discussion Group: - SPARC: what does it mean for your library
and your campus?
ALCTS Scholarly Communication Discussion Group
Monday, February 1, 1999, 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Philadelphia Marriott, Salon D
The topic will be "SPARC: what does it mean for your
library and your campus?" The Scholarly Publishing and
Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) is an initiative of
the Association of Research Libraries that aims to foster
expanded competition in scholarly journal publishing.
SPARC has been in the news lately as it forms partnerships
with scholarly societies such as the American Chemical
Society, and collaborates to launch new journals like
Evolutionary Ecology Research. For more information, see
the SPARC website at <www.arl.org/sparc>.
Rick Johnson, Enterprise Director of SPARC, will present an
overview of the project and talk about how libraries are
collaborating in SPARC. Mike Hannant of the Royal Society
of Chemistry will talk about SPARC partnerships with
scholarly societies. Karla Hahn, Collection Management
Coordinator at the University of Maryland Libraries will
look at what SPARC's efforts mean for library serials
collections and budgets.
Please come with questions and share information about what
your library is doing to raise awareness on campus about
serials pricing and scholarly communication issues.
