                       HEAD, PRESERVATION SERVICES


The MIT Libraries seeks a skilled and energetic individual to direct and
continually develop the Libraries' preservation program, including
management of the Preservation Services unit which performs in-house
treatments, commercial binding management, shelf preparation, and brittle
book replacement for the library system.  Primary emphasis is on
preservation of the circulating collections; program includes projects for
special collections and Archives .

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Head of Collection Management Services,
plans and implements the preservation program, and develops policies and
procedures for in-house and outsourced operations. Maintains understanding
of emerging technologies. Determines treatments appropriate to diverse
collections conservation goals, and trains staff in performing treatments
and preparing items for work by outside vendors. Works with collection
managers and others to identify preservation priorities and coordinate
workflow. Oversees disaster preparedness and response, staff education, and
special programs. Supervises a unit of one full-time and three part-time
assistants, and student assistants; trains staff and students in all unit
operations. Manages budget, supply and equipment purchasing, and quality
assurance. Prepares statistical and management reports. Participates in
broader planning activities and special projects.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school
with emphasis on preservation, or with subsequent work in a preservation
program; OR a Bachelor's degree, accompanied by the completion of formal
conservation training or apprenticeship.    Three to five years
direct/related experience. Substantial knowledge of theory and practice of
preservation, including good bench skills.  Demonstrated ability to manage
projects and to communicate effectively.  Experience in supervision and
training.  Evidence of potential to succeed in a production oriented,
rapidly changing, academic library environment.

HIRING SALARY:	$33,000 minimum.  Actual salary will depend on experience.

The MIT Libraries include five major subject libraries (architecture and
planning; engineering; humanities; science; social sciences and management)
and several branch libraries in specialized subject areas.  The Libraries
contain more than 2.3 million printed volumes, over 17,000 serial
subscriptions, and extensive collections of microforms, maps, slides,
photographs, sound recordings, printed music, manuscripts, motion pictures,
and videotapes.  The Libraries' automated system is Geac Advance.  The
public catalog, Barton, is available within the Libraries and on the campus

information about library services, access to numerous databases, and links
to pertinent Internet resources.  MIT Libraries maintain membership in the
Association of Research Libraries, the Boston Library Consortium, and OCLC
through NELINET.
