Have any subscribers used Library Dynamics Weedlist service [described in
COLLDV-L no. 1843]? I'd like to hear any experiences that librarians could
share.

Thanks in advance.

I just noticed Eva Lautemann's posting on Colldv-l asking if libraries have
had experience with the Weedlist services. Perhaps you might clear up any
possible confusion with a statement such as the following:

"The recently completed Weedlist database and the unique new custom
Speedweeding service are still quite new and have not yet been used in
academic libraries.

The September 8th posting (no.1843) was primarily an announcement of the
Library Dynamics free offer to match libraries' holdings against the
Weedlist database.

These test matches, many of which are now underway, will show each
participating llibrary how many of these
widely-held titles are still on its shelves. They will also serve as the
basis for one of our proposals to carry out a custom Speedweeding project at
a fixed not-to-exceed price. As we charge on a per-hit basis, each library
will be paying only in proportion to the potential benefits it will receive
from the project.

As described in the posting, these 53,222 widely-held titles were once
recommended for purchase in the early editions of Books for College
Libraries but dropped from later collections by the ALA selection
committees. Today these volumes are prime candidates for removal to
off-site storage facilities or for actual discarding (after going through
our retention-review process).

For specific details about how to participate in the free Weedlist matching
program, please contact Bill Buchanan (wbuchanan_at_erols.com) who predicts
that "within six months, Eva's request for endorsements will
produce a number of positive responses
