From: Kwasi Sarkodie-Mensah <sarkodik_at_bc.edu>
I spent a week in the Dominican Republic working with
Boston College students teaching school kids in a village
two hours away from the capital, Santa Domingo. There are
two US Sisters working with the community to build a school
and a library to serve the community. The school project
is funded by the Fe Y Alegria movement that relies on the
collaboration among dedicated lay and religious men and
women to provide for poor and marginalized children a
quality education that is internationally recognized as a
model for future educational projects. The library is
almost completed, but apart from the will of God, the
Sisters have no idea where the books to fill the library
will come from.
Does anyone have any ideas about how we as librarians can
help equip this library with Spanish language materials
that will benefit elementary school students, and also
prepare the local teachers working with the Sisters.
Does anyone have a list in Spanish similar to the Books
for College Libraries/Public Libraries/School Libraries?
Are there publishers who will be willing to contribute
Spanish books for the library?
This is not a church propaganda. It is a real situation
where those of us concerned about international
librarianship and diversity can help a community to
develop. If you have any questions, please feel free to
contact me via email or any mode you prefer
Please send any information you may have to the Sisters at
this address:

Thanks

Check out our Book Donation Program site at
http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/hsl/cms/donation.html
which lists various agencies/institutions/individuals who are collecting
books for shipment to needy sites overseas. I would be happy to list this
effort. Note that donors respond best to listings with a U.S. contact
where they can simply send materials for collection.
Take a look at the site, and if you wish to be included, send me summary
of what you need, using the existing listings as a model.
Thanks. -- Pamela Rose
