North Carolina State University Libraries invites applications and nominations
for the position of Assistant Head, Collection Management Department. The
Collection Management Department is responsible for developing the Libraries'
collections, allocating the collections budget, formulating collection
development policies, assessing users' needs, and performing faculty liaison
activities. The department, composed of seven librarians and three support
staff members, is strongly committed to building collections rich in both
print and electronic formats. Collection Management is supported by
discipline-based subject teams that draw together public and technical
services librarians with discipline-related assignments to consider
programmatic issues. The collections budget for the 1998/99 fiscal year
exceeds $7 million, and the collection is currently in a state of rapid growth
of monographs and electronic resources.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the head of Collection Management, shares
responsibility for the administration of collection management in the NCSU
Libraries.  Directs the activities of three science and engineering
librarians; supervises three support staff.  Serves (in rotation) as chair of
a science or engineering subject team. Coordinates  collection management
activities of branch librarians, including selection and transfer of
materials.  Works closely with faculty and graduate students to develop,
assess, and preserve the collections.  Maintains active dialogue with
counterparts in the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) to further
historically strong cooperative collection development programs. Participates
in library planning, serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams
and is expected to be active professionally.

Qualifications
Required:   ALA-accredited MLS. Experience in sciences or engineering
collection management. Demonstrated knowledge of resources and applications of
current and emerging technologies as they meet the needs of library clients.
Understanding of scholarly communication and issues of ownership and access.
History of establishing effective liaison with research faculty and students.
Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate clearly, knowledgeably,
and personably, orally and in writing. Ability to work independently and in a
team environment. Able to set priorities effectively and to resolve competing
demands in an environment of fast paced change.
Preferred:   Academic background in sciences or engineering.  Experience with
library collections budgets. Supervisory experience.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the
Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Research Libraries.  Duke
University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Central University and NC State form the Triangle Research Libraries Network,
with combined resources approaching 12 million volumes, and collections
budgets totaling more than $22 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience,  not
less than $42,000 for this position  Librarians have academic status without
tenure or rank.  Benefits include:  26 days vacation, 12 days sick leave;
health insurance (comprehensive major medical or HMO); and state, TIAA/CREF or
other retirement options.  Additional and optional dental, life, disability,
deferred compensation, and legal plans are available.  Tuition waiver program
for all campuses of The University of North Carolina is available.
