COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR
for the UNIVERSITY LIBRARY (LIB 99-012)
SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Rank:   Senior Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian (depending upon
qualifications)

Qualifications:

Required: awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a
multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study,
training, reference service, teaching and other comparable experience.
ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent degree with a minimum of five years
substantial collection development and management experience in an academic
or research library, including working knowledge of standard selection and
evaluation methods and tools and of automated acquisitions and serials
systems; broad knowledge of and experience with academic collection
development and management issues and trends in publishing and of scholarly
research needs and methods.  Excellent written and oral communication
skills.  Ability to work effectively with colleagues and diverse clientele.

Responsibilities:

Address the informational needs of a student population of great
diversity-in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and
academic preparation-with primary focus in collection development.
Responsibilities include: manage day-to-day collection
development/management functions and operations, assuring consistency and
quality of collections in the University Library and collection management
projects, such as those related to journal cancellation, storage,
preservation, and evaluation; monitor and evaluate the Library approval
plans; oversee collection development and management activities of the
selectors; share responsibility for recruitment, retention, and evaluation
of all selectors;  in consultation with the Library Fiscal Officer,
coordinate the preparation and allocation of, and monitor, the library's
materials budget of $ 1.5  million; chair the Collection Development
Steering Committee; supervise Acquisitions Department through its department
head; participate in the Library's development efforts as they relate to
collection management; collection development and liaison responsibilities
for particular academic programs (not specified at this time); actively
participate in defining and implementing key strategies for acquiring or
accessing electronic resources; coordinate the Library's participation in
systemwide cooperative/collaborative collection development efforts; provide
leadership in the application of new technologies; and coordinate INNOPAC
projects related to collection development/management.

Salary Range:

Senior Assistant Librarian $43,584-$82,176
Associate Librarian $50,124-$90,252

This is a tenure-track position offering a 12-month work plan, plus fringe
benefits.  A 10/12-month work plan is available after one year's service. A
record of progressive professional and/or scholarly development is required
for retention, tenure and promotion.
