Baker Library, Collection Development Officer
Reporting to the Director of Resource and Database Management, the
Collection Development Officer provides a leadership role in Baker Library
for the selection of business information resources in digital, multimedia,
and print formats to support faculty research and the MBA, doctoral, and
Executive Education programs at the Harvard Business School.
Key responsibilities include:
Policy development and planning related to library collections development,
including negotiation and management of contracts and licensing agreements
for multimedia and digital resources;
Oversight of a $1 million-plus information resources budget;
Coordinating the work of individual selectors in various library
departments on the continuing development of Bakerís collections in all
formats;
Working closely with Research Services staff to stay abreast of faculty
research interests and curriculum development directions;
Working closely with the Director of Historical Collections to plan and
coordinate the ongoing acquisition of business history resources;
Working with counterparts in the Harvard College Library and other Harvard
University libraries as appropriate to develop agreements and procedures
for cooperative collection development;
Creating and overseeing mechanisms for the evaluation, selection, and
development of new electronic and print products, coordinating with the
Electronic Products Specialist in the Baker Library Information Technology
Department;
Providing leadership for further developments in the Harvard Business
School Core Collection Catalog and other print and electronic tools;
Creating and overseeing mechanisms for analyzing the collections and for
developing strategies for attaining the collection levels required to
support the faculty and the various curricula at Harvard Business School;
Serving as a key liaison with faculty and program administrators on
collection development issues;
Coordinating with the Database Support Services and Materials Management
departments in the bibliographic and physical management of the collections;
Representing Baker Library within Harvard University and regionally,
nationally, and internationally in collection development matters.
Qualifications:
Required: ALA-accredited MLS; experience in business or social sciences
information services or academic and research library collection
development; demonstrated understanding of the evolving role of the
academic research library and issues related to scholarly communication,
access and ownership, and emerging technologies; superior interpersonal
skills; demonstrated ability to provide leadership, set priorities, and
resolve competing demands in an atmosphere of rapid change; excellent
planning, analytical, and communication skills; demonstrated ability to
work cooperatively with and coordinate the efforts of colleagues from
across departments to achieve stated goals; strong customer service
orientation; demonstrated creativity and initiative; high degree of
computer literacy, including proficiency with PCs and Windows95 applications.
Desirable: Previous experience selecting business information resources or
providing business reference services; reading knowledge of one or more
foreign languages.
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, $43,700 minimum.
