FOREIGN LANGUAGE REFERENCE AND ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIAN
Middlebury College Library invites applications for a Foreign Language
Reference and Acquisitions Librarian. The College has a strong
reputation for teaching foreign languages during the regular academic
year and in the summer intensive programs. We are seeking an innovative
and versatile individual who will report jointly to the heads of
Reference and Collection Management and enjoy a combination of
reference, instruction, collection development, and acquisition
responsibilities in the foreign language area.
RESPONSIBILITIES. Within the Reference Department, assists students,
faculty, and other users in identifying and evaluating information
through a large and sophisticated network of electronic databases. In
conjunction with faculty, designs and delivers library instruction for
language courses and thesis students. Prepares web-based and print
library guides for Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Japanese,
Chinese, and Arabic. Participates in a wide range of reference planning
and services, including regularly scheduled weekday and weekend
reference desk service. Within the Collection Development Department,
works with foreign language and international studies faculty to select
materials for the Library's foreign language collections in a variety of
formats. Reviews foreign language collections, identifies lacunae for
retrospective collection building and recommends titles for withdrawal.
Suggests foreign language materials budget allocation adjustments and
changes in policies regarding these resources to the Collection
Management Librarian. Keeps abreast of advances in information
technology relating to foreign language resources. Works closely with
Acquisitions and Serials staff to develop, review, and assess approval
plans or to identify other selection methods for all foreign language
materials. Develops procedures which best meet user needs in
conjunction with Acquisitions and Serials staff. Strengthens relations
wih and assesses performance of foreign language materials vendors.
Takes part in the faculty liaison program with language faculty during
the summer sessions and the academic year. Engages in scholarly
activity in the library and/or language field through professional
reading, conference attendance, and contact with faculty and other
scholars.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS: Master of Library Science degree from an
ALA accredited program required. Minimum of two years post-MLS
experience in an academic library. Fluency in two or more languages
taught at Middlebury College, including one European language. (A
graduate degree in language or linguistics desirable.) Familiarity with
use and application of microcomputers in a fully networked campus
environment. Evidence of effective analytical, organizational, and
interpersonal skills.
COMMUNITY: Middlebury College is a private, highly selective
undergraduate liberal arts institution with strong summer programs in
the Foreign Language Schools and the Bread Loaf School of English.
Founded in 1800, Middlebury College has a current enrollment of 2000 and
will expand to 2350 over the next decade. The Library is in the early
stages of a renovation and expansion which will increase its physical
size by 75%. The library staff works in a sophisticated networked
environment utilizing a DRA library system with a database of 750,000
bibliographic and authority records and a full range of automated
information retrieval services. The College is located at the foot of
the Green Mountains in the Champlain Valley, 35 miles south of
Burlington, Vermont.
BENEFITS AND SALARY: Salary minimum of $30,000 depending on
qualifications and experience. Comprehensive benefits package,
