Curator of the East Asian Collection

The University of Chicago Library seeks applicants for the position of
Curator of the East Asian Collection.  The Curator is responsible for strong
and creative leadership of the East Asian collection, and active
participation in broader Library initiatives.  The Curator consistently
supports and collaborates closely with East Asia bibliographers, faculty and
students in developing and maintaining the Library's collection of over half
a million volumes in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Manchu, Mongol and Tibetan,
and Western languages from and about East Asia.  This collection supports
teaching and research for the Department of East Asian Languages and
Civilizations, the Center for East Asian Studies, and for interested faculty
and students in other departments, such as programs in East Asian art.  This
position carries with it specific collection development responsibilities
that may vary, based on the expertise of candidates for the position.
Currently there are 8.5 FTE clerical and 5 FTE professional staff.
Acquisitions and cataloging positions are arrayed along functional lines,
and in the interim report to the Assistant Director for Technical Services.
The Curator provides bibliographic and reference services, including
referrals to other bibliographers, to users of East Asian materials; and has
responsibility for broad oversight of the management of public services.
This position reports to the Assistant Director for Collection Development
and Public Services for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Qualifications:  Educational requirements include a graduate library degree
from an ALA accredited library school and graduate work in East Asian
studies.  Advanced formal training beyond the Masters degree is preferred.
At least five years experience in a research library, thorough acquaintance
with the bibliography and research methodology of East Asian studies, and
demonstrated strong leadership along with progressive management and
supervisory experience are required.  Good to fluent knowledge of English
and modern and classical Chinese or Japanese, with working knowledge of
French and German is required.  Familiarity with other Asian languages
(e.g., Korean, Manchu, Mongol, Tibetan) is highly desirable.  Excellent oral
and written communication skills and interpersonal skills are required.  The
ability to incorporate changing technology into the work of the staff in the
East Asian Library and to establish  effective interaction with all areas
outside of the East Asian Library are required.

Salary and Benefits:  Appointment salary will be based on qualifications and
experience.  Benefits include a contributory retirement plan, health and
life insurance, paid time off including vacation, University holidays,
personal holidays, and sick leave.  There is a tuition benefit plan for
college-age and younger children.
