At the University of Pretoria (South Africa), we are looking at ways
to redesign our short loan collection and would like information from
other university libraries about how they handle study materials and
prescribed books. We would really appreciate feedback on all or any
of the following questions.
N.B. Please direct your responses to my email address:

1. Is there a short loan collection of study materials in the
library? What is its scope: general supplementary sources on
"permanently" held in the short loan collection, specific
supplementary materials held for short periods only, or required
texts for courses?
2. Are study materials supplied electronically? Or are study packs
used? How is copyright handled? Are electronically supplied
documents or study pack documents used in conjunction to a
more traditional short loan collection? If so, what is the decision
of how to supply a specific document based on?
3. Who compiles the list of required texts? Is the library or
perhaps a bookstore responsible for it? Does the library collect
these required texts for its collection (short loan or regular
collection)?
Your input would be very valuable for us.
Thanks,
Anne van der Walt
