Does anyone out there have any experience with
public-access compact shelving of a large research library collection
comprised of bound periodicals? NYU-BOBST LIBRARY plans to
consolidate all of its bound periodicals onto public-access (ie, browsable)
compact shelving. How was the collection organized -- by title? by
call number? Since titles will grow, how did you manage leaving room?
There is also some concern about moving what could be
medium- to high-use items like recent science journals onto compact
shelving. Will users need to "take a number" to browse?
Any advice to the small task force investigating this would
be most welcome. Thank you.

Last summer we decided to install compact shelving for the periodical
collection. The collection is accessible by call number and as for the
growth we gave the space required by each title. All the titles were
included not taking into account the use. Our objective was to create
space and make it very easy for the students to locate the periodical. The
shelving is organized in a way that only 4 rows are moving so that you can
have more than more one student at one time consulting. I would suggest
you meet the firm installing the shelving and they ar of great help for the
planning. Don't forget in your planning the floor. If you want carpet for
instance it is additionnal costs to include.
Good luck
