CENTER FOR RESEARCH LIBRARIESí REPORT TO CHIEF COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
OFFICERS OF LARGE ACADEMIC RESEARCH LIBRARIES JANUARY 1998

COLLECTION RESOURCES

COLLECTIONS AND SERVICES POLICY MANUAL - CRLís policy manual has been added
to its website at http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/cdpolicy.htm. The manual was
revised by a Collection and Services Advisory Panelí task force chaired by
Robert Sewell. The revision changed the structure of the document
according to the five collection components in CRLís program; updated the
policy, procedural and factual changes made since August, 1990; and added
services sections for interlibrary loan and document delivery, microform
sales, preservation, and bibliographic access.

VICE PRESIDENT FOR COLLECTION PROGRAMS: Milton T. Wolf has been appointed
Vice President for Collection Programs, effective February 2, 1998. He
will be responsible for the management and development of the five major
components of CRL's expanding cooperative collection development program
for academic and research libraries worldwide. Director of Collection
Development at the University of Nevada, Reno, since 1977, he has held a
variety of staff positions at the libraries of Pennsylvania State
University, Wright State University and the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate in English of Pennsylvania State
University, he obtained a Master's in Library Science from the University
of Michigan, where he has completed the course requirements for a Ph.D. in
American literature. In addition to his distinguished career in
librarianship, which includes extensive professional involvement, papers
and speaking, he is a well-known consultant to libraries on collection
development issues. His interests range widely and often include research
and writing involving science fiction.

FRENCH REVOLUTION OF 1848 MATERIALS DIGITIZED: CRL is cooperating with
ARTFL (American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language)
on a demonstration project to digitize newspapers, pamphlets, and
monographs from the French Revolution of 1848 held by CRL.

The purpose of this project is to increase CRL's experience in the
implementation of digitization projects while advancing the knowledge of
the scholarly community about the collections of CRL. CRL and ARTFL will
discuss expanding collaboration if this project proves beneficial to both
organizations.

The project is being directed by Mark Olsen, ARTFL's Assistant Director,
and Marlys Rudeen, CRL's Microfilm Projects and Preservation Coordinator.
More information about this project will be forthcoming when specific
publications are made available on ARTFL's website. More information about
ARTFL and its database is available at
http://humanities.uchicago.edu/ARTFL.html.

GLOBAL NEWSPAPERS SYMPOSIUM - Selected presentations from the Symposium on
Access to and Preservation of Global Newspapers are available in full at
http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/icon/papers.htm. CRL co-sponsored the symposium
with the Association of Research Libraries, Commission on Preservation and
Access/Council on Library Resources and the Library of Congress held on May
27-28, 1997 at the Library of Congress. The Council of Library Resources,
Norman Ross Publishing Inc., and Swets & Zeitlinger Inc. provided support
for the meeting. These organizations convened the meeting to define the
problems of collecting, storing, preserving, and providing access to
international newspapers and, most importantly, to design a course of
action that will guarantee acquisition of and access to international
newspapers.

The symposium's objective to plan for comprehensive coverage, preservation,
and access to international newspapers has resulted in the formation of the
International Coalition on Newspapers (ICON). The ICON homepage is at
http://wwwcrl.uchicago.edu/icon/icon.htm and will include updates on the
coalition's activities.

GLOBAL RESOURCES PROGRAM: CRL has published the presentations given at its
April 25, 1997 Council of Voting Members symposium on CRL's Role in the
Emerging Global Resources Program. Four speakers -- two librarians and two
faculty members -- addressed topics related to current, expanding needs for
access to materials issued worldwide and how research libraries will meet
demands for these resources.

The symposium proceedings include the remarks of speakers Martin Runkle,
University of Chicago; Deborah Jakubs, Duke University and the Association
of Research Libraries; Albert Hamscher, Kansas State University; and Alan
Beyerchen, Ohio State University. Linda Gould, University of Washington,
served as the symposium moderator. Other materials in the publication are
comments and discussion from the audience and the presentation of CRL
President Don Simpson on how CRL can assume a leadership role in various
projects to increase access to global resources.

The symposium publication is being mailed to all CRL member library
directors and to all councilors. It is available in paper format only and
is free. To order, contact Yvonne Jefferson, Assistant to the CRL
President at jefferso_at_crlmail.uchicago.edu.
