JOB DESCRIPTION FOR
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS/REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
BASIC FUNCTION
This position carries the dual responsibilities of Special Collections
Librarian and member of the Reference and Information Services team.
Primary responsibilities include managing Special Collections and
participating in general collection development and management, reference
service, bibliographic instruction, and assisting the Associate Director
for Public Services.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Manages Special Collections through developing and implementing
policies, procedures, and programs for the selection, arrangement,
cataloging, and preservation of materials; identifying and processing
appropriate acquisitions and materials for deselection; developing
appropriate user guides and publicity; writing grant proposals; training
and supervising student assistants.
2. Locates, evaluates, and acquires serials and monographs from gift and
exchange resources appropriate for addition to the library collections.
3. Participates in Reference Desk duty. Assists faculty, students, staff
and other users by answering specific information requests, offering
research assistance, and guiding users in the effective use of a broad
range of information resources. Will require some evening and weekend
duty.
4. Serves as a bibliographer to designated academic departments and
oversees the selection of print and Internet electronic resources in
assigned subject areas; makes recommendations and provides assistance as
requested in other collection development and evaluation activities;
monitors appropriate portions of the acquisitions budget; works to develop
and maintain good relations with faculty.
5. Participates in computer literature searching activities including
mediated searching and development of selective dissemination of
information.
6. Provides individual, classroom, and group instruction in library
services and procedures, search strategies, and the use of information
resources.
7. Participates as a member of the Public Services team in planning,
policy formulation, identifying and recommending new information resources
and services, training other library personnel, interacting with patrons
and the university community in a professional manner, fostering a
supportive team spirit, and acting in other ways to strengthen reference
and library service; responds to unexpected needs of the Reference
Department.
8. Participates in professional activities.
9.Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:
An MLS from an ALA accredited library school.
Two years public service experience.
Special collections experience.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of electronic information technologies.
Knowledge of information resources in science and engineering.
Ability to work positively with a diverse user population.
Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work creatively in a rapidly
changing environment.
DESIRED:
A background in the physical sciences or engineering.
Public services experience in a science or engineering library.
Experience in bibliographic instruction, reference desk work, computer
literature searching, collection development of print and electronic
resources including Internet resources, and public relations.
SALARY:
Dependent on qualifications. $28,000 minimum.
STARTING DATE:
