		HEAD, COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

The Libraries of the University of California, Irvine invite applications
for the position of Head, Collection Development Department.  Under the
direction of the Associate University Librarian, Collections and Access
Services, manages collection development of all formats librarywide.
Includes overseeing the work of approximately 20 bibliographers, five of
whom report directly to this position.

*Duties and Responsibilities*

The following duties are those for which the Head, Collection Development
Department holds primary responsibility:

… Manages day-to-day collection development/management functions and
operations, assuring consistency and quality of collections in all three
UCI Libraries.
… Monitors and evaluates the Libraries'í approval plans.
… Oversees collection development/management activities of bibliographers;
shares responsibility for recruitment, retention, and evaluation of all
bibliographers; directly supervises and conducts performance reviews for
five bibliographers.
… Coordinates the preparation and allocation of, and monitors, the
Libraries'í materials budget of approximately $4.5 million.
… Has responsibility for collection management projects, such as those
related to storage, weeding and preservation.
… Actively collaborates with other departments in the Libraries to deal
with issues of mutual concern.
… Chairs the Collections Coordinating Council and the Bibliographers
Group.
… Participates in the Libraries'í development efforts as they relate to
collection development.
… Maintains regular and close communication with the Associate University
Librarian, Collections and Access Services.
… May have collection development and liaison responsibilities for a
particular academic program, depending on background and experience.

The following duties are those for which the Head, Collection Development
Department holds secondary responsibility, in consultation with the
Associate University Librarian, Collections and Access Services, and the
bibliographers:

… Provides leadership and coordination in developing, evaluating and
assessing the Libraries'í collections to support the Universit's
research, teaching and clinical programs.
… Actively participates in defining and implementing key strategies for
acquiring or accessing electronic resources.
… Coordinates the Libraries'í participation in systemwide
cooperative/collaborative collection development efforts and digital
library initiatives.
… Provides leadership in the application of new technologies; coordinates
INNOPAC projects related to collection development/management.

*Qualifications*

Required:

… Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
… Minimum of five years substantial collection development and management
experience in an academic or research library.
… Broad knowledge of and experience with academic/research collection
development/management issues.
… Knowledge of trends in publishing and of scholarly research needs and
methods
… Working knowledge of standard selection and evaluation methods and tools
and of automated acquisitions and serials systems.
… Broad knowledge of and experience with approval plans.
… Experience with library automation and technology applications in
academic or research libraries.

*Collections*

Collections is responsible for the librarywide development and management
of collections under the administration and coordination of the Associate
University Librarian for Collections & Access Services.  In addition to
fifteen bibliographers who are responsible for supporting the collection,
liaison, and service needs of UCI academic programs, Collections includes
three Government Information librarians with collection development
responsibilities, the Southeast Asian Archive Librarian, and the Head of
Special Collections & University Archives.  Most Collections librarians
are located in departments throughout the Libraries and are responsible
for both collections and services in their specialized disciplines.  Each
Collections librarian is a member of one of three discipline-based pods
(a.k.a. teams) as well as of the Collections-wide Bibliographers Group.

*The Libraries*

The UCI Libraries consist of the Main Library, the Science Library, and
the Medical Center Library.  The Main Library, which underwent a major
renovation in 1996, primarily serves the Schools of Humanities, Arts,
Social Sciences, and Social Ecology, the Graduate School of Management,
the Department of Education, and Interdisciplinary Studies.  The Science
Library primarily serves the College of Medicine and the Schools of
Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and the Department of
Information and Computer Science.  The Medical Center Library serves the
Medical Center, located 12 miles from the main campus.

The UCI Libraries'í organization includes the use of teams in conjunction
with departments.  The library collection, supported by a budget of $4.5
million, consists of approximately 2 million volumes and 19,000 current
serial titles, a substantial microform collection, and an aggressively
expanding electronic resources collection.  In addition to the local
INNOPAC integrated library system, the Libraries participate in the
University of California MELVYLÆ System.

*University of California, Irvine*

One of nine University of California campuses, the University of
California, Irvine, is nestled in 1,489 acres of coastal foothills, five
miles from the Pacific Ocean between San Diego and Los Angeles.  The
present enrollment is 17,092 students with a faculty of approximately
1,000 including the Medical School.  The current student population
numbers 13,833 undergraduates, 2,277 graduate students, and 1,171 health
sciences students; a 15% increase in student enrollment by the year 2005
is planned.  Ethnic/minority students represent about 70% of the
undergraduate student body.  The University offers 29 doctoral programs in
addition to the M.D.  UCI is ranked nationally in the top fifty
universities; several doctoral programs are ranked in the top 25.  UCI is
a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU).

Librarians at the University of California, Irvine are academic appointees
and receive potential career status at the time of their initial
appointment.  Librarians are periodically subject to peer review for merit
increases based on the following criteria: 1) professional competence and
quality of service within the Library; 2) professional activity outside
the Library;  3) university and public service; and 4) research and other
creative activity.  They are entitled to two days per month of annual
leave, one day per month sick leave, reductions in incidental fees, and
all other perquisites granted to non-faculty academic personnel.  The
University has an excellent retirement system and sponsors a variety of
group life and health insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to
approximately 40% of salary.

*Salary:  Commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range
of
$45,435 - $59,450 (Associate Librarian IV - Librarian III).
