Our library is grappling with the issue of whether to include items
discarded by other libraries in the collection. Our Collection Dev.
Committee seems divided on what to do about such items with some people
feeling that discarded or not, if the material meets other selection
criteria especially relevance to the collection, then the donation must
be accepted and catalogued for the collection.

I would very much like to know how others on this list handle the
following types of donations and gifts:-

	a) discards from other libraries particularly those clearly
stamped "DISCARDED" and including the name of the discarding
	   library

	b) books stamped "Compliments of (Publisher). Not for Resale"
(Does anyone know if publishers have any rules about the uses
to which such books can be put and does a library have the
right to catalogue such books for its collection?)

	c) Review copies: Some faculty members receive personal copies
of books they have reviewed from the publisher, etc.; such books
are, invariably, donated to the library.

I would appreciate any comments that can help us come up with a
definitive policy on how to handle these types of materials. This
message is being posted on other Coll. Dev. lists. Please excuse the
duplication if you happen to be on these other lists.

Thanks,
