I have been asked to prepare a Collection Management Department mission
statement with accompanying goals and measurable outcomes. It would be
helpful to see examples of collection management mission statements,
goals, and outcomes from other libraries. Are there any Web sites with
such documents or Collection Managers willing to share their mission
statements and supporting documents? Please send responses to me.

Here is a summary of responses to my request for examples of collection
mangement mission, goals, objectives. Thanks to all. Your responses
were most useful.
1) One of the best resources is:
Futas, Elizabeth. Collection Development Policies and
Procedures. 3d ed. (Phoenix: Oryx Press, 1995)
Resources on the web are available through ACQWEB's page at
http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/law/acqs/libsci.html
with useful section on collection development with links to collection
development policies on the web.
2) Virginia Tech Universities Libraries on the library's home page,
http://www.lib.vt.edu/
under the pull down menu for "About the Libraries," with selection for
about the library's collections, you will find our policies, the
introductory statement for which is, "The Goals of Collection
Development".
3) Appalachian State University, mission statement of the collection
development team:
The mission of the Collection Development Team is to identify, evaluate,
and select the information resources necessary to support the
University's mission of teaching and scholarship.
This mission is accomplished through:
1. Ongoing analysis of curricular, research, and general information
needs of students, faculty, and staff.
2. Regular evaluation of current collections for adequacy and
relevance.
3. Judicious selection of new materials in all formats, based on the
principles set forth in the Library Collection Development Policy.
4. Continuing education and training of bibliographers to develop
in-depth knowledge of assigned subjects and academic departments.
