Title: Reference Librarian and Selector for the Performing Arts
(Search Re-opened)
Description: Subject specialist for the performing arts with an
emphasis on cinema studies assigned to the General and Humanities
Reference Center, Bobst Library. Librarians serve as partners in the
educational mission of NYU by establishing strong relationships with
the faculty and students, building appropriate subject collections,
and acting as intermediaries to the world of information. Public
service responsibilities include reference assistance with print and
electronic media; library instruction covering traditional, online and
Internet resources; faculty liaison; and preparation of bibliographies
and collection guides. Collection development responsibilities
include selection and assessment of resources in print and non-print
formats, including video recordings, laserdiscs and spoken word
materials and participation in the preservation efforts of the
library. Areas of selection responsibility are cinema studies, dance,
theater, radio and television. Works closely with NYU's Tisch School
of the Arts in supporting research and teaching in all aspects of
cinema and the performing arts.
Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS, subject Master's degree required
for tenure. Two years of successful public service experience in a
relevant academic or special library; extensive knowledge of the
performing arts required; emphasis on cinema studies and experience
with video collection management and development strongly preferred;
successful experience in collection development and media materials
evaluation, selection and acquisition. Knowledge of one or more
Western European languages highly desirable. Experience with
electronic information retrieval, Internet and other networked
resources. Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong
service orientation. Familiarity with bibliographic instruction
recommended.

University serve the school's 50,000 students and faculty and contain
more than 3.5 million volumes. The Elmer Holmes Bobst Library houses
2.5 million of these volumes and serves as the University's principal
research resource. New York University is a member of the Research
Libraries Group and serves as the administrative headquarters of the
Research Library Association of South Manhattan, a consortium which
includes three academic institutions in Greenwich Village. The Avery
Fisher Center for Music and Media is a state-of-the-art media center
with a video collection strong in theater, cinema, and video arts and
an expanding collection of documentaries in a variety of disciplines.
Salary/Benefits: Faculty status, attractive benefits package
including five weeks annual vacation. Salary commensurate with
experience and background. Minimum: $34,000.
