Attached is a position description for a vacant entry level position
in the University of Georgia Libraries.

POSITION:   Business and Economics Bibliographer

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: Collection Services/Social Sciences

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Business and Economics Bibliographer is responsible for
development and management of the Libraries' general collections in
business and economics; for facilitating access to these collections,
including providing reference service in the Main Library Reference
Department; and for serving as liaison with faculty in appropriate
academic departments.  Reference, selection and verification
activities require the use of various systems, including OCLC,
Blackwell North America's New Titles Online (NTO), GALIN (Georgia
Academic Library Information Network), the local integrated online
system, and GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online), the state-wide
system which gives universal access to core materials for every
student and faculty member in the University System of Georgia.

The Social Sciences Department, which includes both the Curriculum
Materials Center and Georgia Center Library,  is composed of 3
bibliographers and 4 support staff.  The Business and Economics
Bibliographer reports to the Head of the Social Sciences Department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Develops and manages the collection in assigned subject areas by
 selecting materials to be added        to the collection; monitoring
 approval plans, firm orders, and standing orders; monitoring and
encumbering appropriate materials budgets; evaluating assigned areas
 of the collection, including gifts;    collaborating with librarians
 in developing collection policies; and weeding materials for removal
 to the Libraries off-site repository.

 Develops and maintains expertise in using and assessing print and
 electronic bibliographic tools, and the GALIN system by
 participating in the searching, verification, and ordering process
 and by assuming responsibility for resolving bibliographic problems
 related to assigned subject areas.

 Expands knowledge of literature in relevant subject areas by keeping
 abreast of current trends in scholarship and publishing, including
 both print and electronic resources.

 Participates in collection building with faculty and students by
 identifying priorities and coordinating collection growth and goals,
 by maintaining effective communication, by preparing accreditation
 reports and evaluating library support for new courses and programs,
 and by interpreting departmental and Libraries' collection
 development/management policies and procedures.

 Facilitates collection use by providing a variety of reference
 services to patrons, including in-depth subject reference and
 general reference service in the Main Library Reference Department,
 bibliographic instruction, the compilation of user information aids,
 and by the identifying and assessing new technologies.

 Contributes to the mission of the Department and the Libraries, by
 maintaining awareness of changes in the organization, by
 participating in the formulation and implementation of policies, by
 working closely with other library units, and by exhibiting
 initiative, creativity, and strong     analytical skills.

 Represents the Libraries and develops and maintains professional
 skills through active  participation in professional organizations or
 activities on state, regional, or national levels.

 Maintains flexibility and contributes to the team effort by assuming
 similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

ALA-accredited MLS; Understanding of current trends and issues in
scholarly publishing and communication, including electronic
resources;  Working knowledge of basic reference sources including
experience in using CD-ROM and online information sources; Experience
with standard microcomputer applications; Ability to interact
successfully and communicate in a clear, knowledgeable, and personable
manner in both a team environment and on an individual basis; Ability
to be flexible and to accept and manage change; Interest in
professional development activities; Degree in business or economics
preferred;  Professional experience working with business sources in
an academic or research library preferred; Working knowledge of a
modern European language preferred

BENEFITS:

Salary minimum:  $27,000 commensurate with experience.

BACKGROUND:

The University of Georgia, the nation's oldest state chartered
land-grant university and the major institution in the University

the UGA campus in Athens, with several branch locations throughout the
state. The Main Library, located on north campus, collects materials
in the social sciences, humanities and business. The Science Library,
located in the Graduate Studies building on south campus, contains
holdings for the physical and life sciences. Together the Libraries
own over 3.5 million volumes and over 5 million microform units, and a
current materials budget of 6.3 million dollars.  Items in the
collection can be identified through GALIN, the UGA Libraries' on-line

regional depository for U.S. government publications.  The University
of Georgia is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the
Center for Research Libraries, and a charter member of SOLINET.  The
total budget for FY1997 is approximately $16 million;  the material
budget is $6.7 million.  Total staff of 230 includes 85 professional
staff.
