ANNOUNCEMENT

This is an invitation to participate in an online discussion
concerning collection development issues regarding research institutions:
cooperation, collaboration, partnering. This discussion will take place
online December 1-14, 1997. It will be hosted by The Center for Research
Libraries and moderated by Milton T. Wolf, Vice President for Collection
Programs at CRL.

We hope to bring forward the very best thinking on this subject and
so we are asking anyone who is interested to provide us before December 1st
with a one page abstract summarizing your views, experiences,
recommendations, analyses, etc. of the issues associated with cooperative
collection development. Please send your abstract to:

Donald B. Simpson, President
Center for Research Libraries
6050 South Kenwood Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637
simpson_at_crlmail.uchicago.edu
(773) 955-0862 (fax)

We at CRL will then select those abstracts that appear to have the
most likelihood of engendering a lively discussion and invite those authors
to participate in the December online chat. The best of the online
discussion will then be transcribed, edited and published by Haworth Press
in a forthcoming issue of Collection Management.

Some of the issues that seem to be relevant for such a discussion are:

         (1) Why cooperate?
         (2) Interlocking, yet independent collections?
         (3) Methodology of cooperation
         (4) Cost effectiveness
         (5) Budget sharing
         (6) Priorities
         (7) Ownership/access
         (8) Document delivery systems
         (9) Potential partners

We at The Center for Research Libraries believe that "the art of
cooperation requires librarians' ability to comprehend and support big
picture goals and the skills to incorporate common good objectives into
local activities so that there is constructive and affirmative benefit to
one's own programs and services." We hope you will join us in this
discussion.
