The University of Kentucky Libraries are faced with a dilemma that,
Isuspect, is not unusual: as the number of new electronic one-time
purchases and continuations we need increase, we are less and less able to
afford them from our current budget. We have cut print serials pretty much
to an irreducible core; thus, cancelling them to free up money for
electronic resources is not an option -- even for those serials that do not
requre dual ownership of both paper and electronic versions. Nor has our
need for print monographs decreased, so we cannot make cuts there either.
I am part of a task force currently preparing a request to our
administration for an infusion of new funds into our recurring materials
budget to be devoted to electronic resources and services. I would like to
include information from other institutions that have faced similar
situations and have come up with solutions. We would also like information
on the percent of your materials budget currently spent on electronic
resources and services and some idea of how that percentage has grown over
the past 5 years.
Please reply privately to the address below. If there is interest, I will
be glad to share with the list, of course.
Thanks in advance.
