> The Stanford University Libraries seeks an individual with
> demonstrated experience in the special collections field for the
> administration of the printed book collections (including the
> processing, organization and control of materials), assistance in the
> identification and acquisition of printed materials, and to serve as a
> Rare Books Bibliographer. The position also entails the effective
> management and administration of all public service activities for the
> Department of Special Collections. The Librarian for Rare Books and
> Public Services works with other Special Collections librarians,
> curators, and bibliographers to maximize awareness of special

> guides, reports, lists, bibliographies, catalogs, and collection
> evaluation.
> * Oversees the control and processing of all gifts and transfers.
> * Is responsible for the effective management and administration of
> all public service activities for the Department of Special
> Collections.
> * Development and implementation of all public service policies and
> procedures with focus particularly in the areas of access to
> materials; reproduction of department holdings (photocopies,
> photographic reproductions, microfilming, and reproduction of
> other formats); use fees; and permissions to cite and/or publish.
> * Supervision and management of all reference service in the
> department including operation of the reading room; training and
> management of departmental staff and students in public service
> activities; tracking of inquiries; monitoring staff responses to

> Qualifications:

> 1. MLS from and ALA-accredited program or equivalent in experience,
> preferably with formal training in rare books and manuscripts
> (including bibliography and history of the book).
> 2. Demonstrated knowledge of rare books and the rare book trade
> including trade sources and practice.
> 3. Three years experience in the field of special collections
> librarianship.
> 4. Knowledge of at least one Western European language other than
> English is required. Knowledge of one or more additional
> languages is desirable.
> 5. Knowledge of the history of writing, the book and printing; some
> knowledge of historical and literary manuscript sources; some
> practical knowledge of crafts of printing, binding and book
> conservation are highly desirable.
> 6. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with
> library staff as well as with faculty, students, and donors is
> required. Ability to perform effectively in and contribute

> The Department of Special Collections is the principal repository for
> Stanford's historical research collections in all formats including
> printed books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and prints. the
> department's holdings comprise more than 200,000 books and 20 million
> manuscript pieces. Strengths of the department's collections are
> modern literature, the history and art of the book, the history of
> science, continental history and literature, classical literature and
> philology, chilldren's literature, Mexican American history, and the
> history of the Stanford community.

> The department's principal mission is to support the academic work of
