We at Wichita State University have a materials budget of approximately
$1.7 million. We have watched the electronic abstract and indexing bill
grow at an alarming rate (CD-ROM, tapeloaded databases on the OPAC,
databases available through the Internet). We would expect that some
libraries limit the amount that is spent on such titles (this is just the
a+i type databases and reference subscriptions such as dictionaries and
encyclopedias, not e journals).
Perhaps, because these are part of the Reference collection, the
Reference
collection is limited to a certain percent of the materials budget, say
12%. Who allocates the proportion that way?
Could those of you who have set boundaries please respond to me directly
and tell me your approach to this allocation problem? Thanks
