The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is pleased to announce the
appointment of Milton T. Wolf as Vice President for Collection Programs,
effective February 2, 1998. In this position, Wolf will be responsible for
the management and development of the five major components of CRL's
expanding cooperative collection development program for academic and
research libraries worldwide.
Announcing the appointment today at the CRL library and offices in
Chicago, President Don Simpson described Milton Wolf as "the right person
for a critical job at this point in CRL's history. I can think of no other
person who can bring the precisely correct mix of skills, experience,
vision and energy to the CRL enterprise. We are absolutely delighted Milt
Wolf has agreed to join the CRL management team at this important juncture."
Director of Collection Development at the University of Nevada,
Reno, since 1977, Wolf has held a variety of staff positions at the
libraries of Pennsylvania State University, Wright State University and the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate in
English of Pennsylvania State University, he obtained a Master's in Library
Science from the University of Michigan, where he has completed the course
requirements for a Ph.D. in American literature. In addition to his
distinguished career in librarianship, which includes extensive
professional involvement, papers and speaking, Wolf is a well-known
consultant to libraries on collection development issues. His interests
range widely and often include research and writing involving science
fiction.
Commenting upon the appointment, Wolf noted, "When I first saw the
position announcement, I knew that my entire career had prepared me for
this incredible opportunity to serve the academic and research communities.
CRL is the "Center" for worldwide cooperation in the immense sea of
information that is being exponentially created, especially in the
burgeoning area of electronic resources. With the realization that no
single institution can provide all the information needed by its clients,
those institutions who commit themselves to cooperation in all aspects of
information provision will be the ones that succeed. We will meet and be
united at the Information Interface, and CRL is poised to facilitate this.
Asked about his immediate priorities, Wolf said, "I will do all I
can to understand the various institutions that comprise CRL, the
composition of their collections, their goals and visions, and their
librarians and users. Of course, I will at the same time be certain that I
understand intimately the collections of CRL and its ongoing commitments.
In short, I will be doing a lot of listening and observing at first."
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is an international
not-for-profit consortium of colleges, universities and libraries that
makes available scholarly research resources to users everywhere. Governed
by the major research libraries of North America and funded by fees, grants
and contributions, CRL operates a cooperative collection development
program that assists academic and research libraries in reducing the costs
of making otherwise inaccessible and important peripheral research
materials available to scholars and researchers. The cooperative
collection development program collects, preserves and provides access to
these research materials in print, microform and electronic formats. For
the 21st century, CRL will continue to be a critical resource for
organizing and providing access to unusual and unique scholarly materials
to users worldwide. Special emphases will be placed on storing and
delivering electronic resources, partnering effectively with a variety of
organizations and institutions with shared interests, seeking a balanced
and practical position involving intellectual property rights issues, and
continuing to improve bibliographic access to CRL collections.
