POSITION: Bibliographer/Reference Librarian
AVAILABLE: September 1997
DESCRIPTION: The librarian in this entry level position is primarily
responsible for selecting and managing collections that support
undergraduate and graduate programs in Economics, Philosophy and an
interdisciplinary program in Women's Studies. Additional
responsibilities include serving as faculty liaison in assigned
disciplines; evaluating collections and maintaining written collection
policy statements; collection development planning and budgeting;
monitoring materials fund allocations; providing scheduled reference
desk service, as well as specialized reference service; and
participating in the Central Library's bibliographic instruction
program. This position reports to the Assistant Director for
Collections.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited program or
equivalent is required. (Equivalent is defined as a graduate degree
from a foreign library school comparable to U.S. ALA-accredited
schools. These schools are identified by the American Library
Association.) Outstanding written and oral communication skills are
essential, as is the ability to work effectively with faculty,
students, and library staff. Preferred qualifications are:
successful working experience in an academic library, particularly in
collection development and reference; advanced degree in economics or
philosophy; reading knowledge of a western European language; proven
interest in computing and electronic information resources. Desired
qualification: academic background in economics, philosophy, or
women's studies.
ENVIRONMENT: Vanderbilt University consists of ten schools and
colleges with a total enrollment of over 10,000. The University is
served by the Jean and Alexander Heard Library, a system of over 2.3
million volumes and a staff of 230 persons. The library is highly
automated with an online system based on SIRSI software. It is a
member of Association of Research Libraries, Center for Research
Libraries, and SOLINET. The Central and Science/Engineering
Libraries' collections primarily serve the College of Arts and Science
and the School of Engineering. The two libraries hold approximately
1.2 million volumes and employ 45 full-time staff, including 14
bibliographers and selectors responsible for collection development.
The Central/Science/Engineering collections budget is $3.4 million.
COMPENSATION: This is an entry level position. Salary: $28,000
minimum. Benefits are those applicable to exempt employees of the
University, including health care insurance; retirement plan options;
tuition discount program; and 15 vacation days, 9 paid holidays, and
12 days of sick leave per year.
