POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
VICE PRESIDENT FOR COLLECTION PROGRAMS
The Center for Research Libraries is a major international consortium of
academic and research libraries which provides collections-based
collaborative programs and services focusing on a 5.5 million volume
collection located near the University of Chicago. The Center
functions as a cooperative research library dedicated to acquiring,
storing, preserving, providing bibliographic access to, and lending from a
collection that complements and supplements the collections of major
research libraries of North America.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Serves as a deputy to the President with primary responsibility for leading
the development and operation of CRL's international cooperative collection
development program that supplements North American academic and research
libraries by acquiring, preserving and making available important
collections in newspapers, serials, dissertations, retrospective materials
and area studies. Oversees staff's management of major cooperative
activities in micropublishing and reformatting, including conversion to
electronic media, and area studies. Also, directs the staff's management
of the internal functions of bibliography, preservation, collection
management and development, and stacks management.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fulfills the President's role and responsibilities for the organizational
mission in his/her absence. Represents and speaks for the Center on
collection programs in international and national forums. Provides
leadership to all aspects of the Center's cooperative collection
development programs. Plans and monitors the effectiveness of Center
programs, operations and services to meet the members' needs. Plans,
controls and directs the activities of the Collection Resources Division
with responsibility for oversight of fiscal, staffing, technical and
programmatic processes, including representing the Center at appropriate
meetings, conducting research studies, maintaining the Center's Collections
& Services Policy Manual, managing the divisional budget, which includes
the Center's library materials and preservation budgets, coordinating the
area studies microfilm projects, managing microfilming operations and
vendor relations, and managing all book stacks operations. Works with the
Executive Office to prepare Center program statements and externally-funded
project work plans related to collection programs and operations. Works
with the Member Services Division to prepare publication texts and
promotional vehicles for Center programs. Serves on the Center's Directors
Council. Serves as staff liaison to the Board's Planning Committee and
Task Forces as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
At least 5 years' relevant experience, preferably in an academic or
research library. An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science is
preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and
demonstrated managerial ability and leadership skills are required.
Demonstrated knowledge of library collections and services management
practices and procedures and of cooperative development programs, as well
as the ability to function in a multi-institutional collaborative
environment is essential.
SUPERVISION:
Directly supervises 3.0 FTE professional staff. Reports to the President.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary minimum $60,000, depending upon qualifications. Comprehensive
benefits package including 22 vacation days per year, 15 sick days per
year, medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance and
TIAA-CREF retirement plan.
