Position Available:
        SOCIAL SCIENCES BIBLIOGRAPHER
        UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, PHILADELPHIA, PA

BROAD FUNCTION:
The University of Pennsylvania Library System is seeking an experienced
librarian to manage and develop the Library's collections and services
in a number of social science disciplines.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Director for Collection Management and
Development, serve as the Library's principal liaison to the University's
social science departments and programs.  Select publications and
information sources in print, electronic formats, microform and video as
appropriate, in criminology, economics, gender/women's studies, law,
linguistics, regional science, political science, psychology and
sociology for the Library in accordance with library policies.
Participate in the Library's collection management and development
program and assist in the long-term collection planning in the social
sciences. Identify for transfer to storage in accordance with the needs
of academic programs and library policy. Assume responsibility for
drafting or revising collection policy statements and conspectus data for
the social sciences. Work with other selectors throughout the library
system, including the Librarians of the Lippincott Library (business) and
the University Museum Library (anthropology, archaeology) and the
bibliographers for communications, education and social work in
implementing the Library's collection management and development program.
Participate in developing Penn's digital library support for the social
sciences and lead the Library's efforts to make quantitative information
available to Penn's social scientists.

QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent in experience,
training and practice. Advanced degree in one of the social sciences is
essential. Knowledge of information resources for the social sciences in
electronic form, including quantitative information, is essential.  The
successful candidate will be expected to show considerable initiative in
developing digital library support for the social sciences. Reading
knowledge of French and/or German desirable. Demonstrated ability to work
effectively, independently and cooperatively with faculty, students and
library staff.  Good interpersonal skills. Preference given to candidates
with recent collection management experience in an ARL library.

SALARY & RANK:
Appointment as Librarian III requires 3-5 years of professional library
experience (starting salary: $32,857 - $42,591), and appointment as
Librarian IV requires a minimum of 5 years of professional library
experience (starting salary: $36,050 - $46,814).
