POSITION #1: Collection Management Librarian for the Sciences, with
responsibility for coordinating the selection of
electronic resources.

DESCRIPTION: Virginia Commonwealth University seeks an energetic,
knowledgeable, and forward-looking individual
for a dual role on its collection management team. As Collection Management
Librarian for the Sciences, the incumbent
will develop and manage monograph, serial, nonprint, and electronic
materials in the sciences. Subject responsibilities
include: chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, physics and
astronomy, mathematical sciences, computer
sciences and information science, and possibly other related disciplines.
Duties include: monitoring budget allocations for
assigned areas; reviewing approval materials, monitoring plans, and
preparing profiles; working closely with departmental
faculty to identify priorities, coordinate collection growth, and maintain
effective communication; assessing collection
needs through formal evaluations; making preservation decisions; evaluating
gifts. collaborating with librarians and faculty
in developing collection goals, policies, programs, and budgets for science
resources; preparing accreditation reports and
evaluating library support for new courses and programs. The position also
coordinates the selection of electronic
resources at University Library Services by facilitating the identification,
evaluation, and selection of electronic resources
by the librarians on the collection management team. Duties include:
facilitating evaluation and technical assessment of
electronic resources; designing and monitoring efficient processes for
electronic resource selection; serving as a resource
person for licensing issues; and participating in state and regional
initiatives for electronic resources and digital collection
development. Position reports to the Head of Collection Management Services.

QUALIFICATIONS: ALA accredited MLS required. The following qualifications
are preferred: academic background
in the sciences, with an advanced degree strongly desired; two or more years
experience developing collections and
selecting electronic resources in a research library; awareness of national
trends in scholarly publishing; knowledge of
electronic resources in the sciences and other disciplines; knowledge of
approval plans; ability to communicate a strong
library image to university faculty and administrators; experience with
library automation and technology applications in
academic libraries; strong service orientation and/or public services
experience; excellent oral and written communication
skills; positive interpersonal style; ability to work independently as well
as part of team; sensitivity to the concerns of a
research library and its users; initiative and creativity; strong analytical
skills; flexibility and the ability to accept and
manage change; ability to organize time and deliver work on deadline;
involvement in professional activities; ability to meet
requirements for faculty advancement, including professional service and
publication. Experience working in a culturally
diverse environment highly preferred.

psychology, public administration, social
