We are in the process of revising our collection development
policy. As part of this effort we are currently looking at developming our
"Core List" of journals for the college. We have a newly formed
Collection Devlopment Advisory Committee that is composed of faculty members
and librarians. Since we are a small college and our faculty is already
over commited with heavy teaching loads and many other committees and other
duties, it has been somewhat difficult to engage their participation in
moving toward a core list of journals. My sense is that, while that are
interested in this project, they simply do not have a great deal of time
to devote to it. We started with a long list of all the journals that
are on the CD-ROM databases that are currently mounted on our LAN.

They found this task to be very daunting. I am looking for a
better way of moving toward a "real" core list of journals. Some libraries
have talked about a core list in concept but have not been able to actual
produce a core list. If you, in fact have been able to produce a core
list of journals, I would be most interested in hearing the process that you
followed to reach this goal. Here are a few of my questions:

        1) What process did you use?

        2) How long did the process take?

        3) How did you engage the faculty?

        4) What role did your professional librarians play in the
            process?

        5) What part, if any, did the administration play in this?

        6) What caveats, if any, were employed in reference to
            the core list?

        7) How often do you intend to review the core list for revision?

        8) What criteria did you employ in creating and/or revising
            the core list of journals?

        9) What would you do differently if you were to start this
            project again.

        Thank you for your help.
