SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARIAN

Jackson Library of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro
seeks a knowledgeable, imaginative and energetic librarian to oversee
its special collections and University Archives currently totaling
more than 20,000 volumes and approximately four million
archives/manuscripts items.  Reports to the Director of the Library.
Responsible for overall management and collection development of a
Division with a quarter-century's history of commitment to access and
preservation of collections that support University programs;
providing quality reference and research services; lecturing to
classes and groups;  implementing promotional and outreach activities;
fostering strong relations with support groups, donors, booksellers,
and the community; keeping pace with preservation technologies and
making sound decisions for preservation of rare and unique materials
and collections; evaluating the potential of new information
technologies as they may apply to special collections and archives;
drafting proposals for fund-raising and grants.  Visit us at

REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited M.L.S. and minimum five years'
progressively responsible experience in rare books, manuscripts and
archives work.  Individual must be highly organized and possess
exceptional written and oral communication skills.  Ability to work
well with Library staff, University colleagues, donors, students and
visiting researchers and knowledge of the rare book world and book
selling are expected, as is a strong commitment to public service,
access and preservation.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE: Second Master's degree in humanities, preferably
English literature or art history; course work in archives
theory/management; reading knowledge of a European language; previous
success in acquiring supplemental funding through grants or
establishing strong donor relations; experience in typesetting and
handpress operation.

A twelve-month, tenure-track faculty position available May 1, 1997.
