I've attempted to post to this group before, but don't think my
messages were ever distributed. Hope it works this time.
I'd like to learn more about Centralized Selection. Are there members of
this group who
have had experience with it? What have you found the good and
bad effects of it to be? Can you refer me to any kind of references
(electronic or hardcopy to read to learn more about
it? I have read a couple articles that addressed the issues head-on:
articles by Nancy Pearl and Craig Buthod about collection
development practices in the Tulsa City-County Library ("Upgrading the
'McLibrary'", Lib Journal 117, Oct 15,1992, p37+) nd One by Catherine Gibson
about Centralized Collection at the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library
("How We Spent $2.7 Million--With the Help of Centralized Selection, Lib
Journal, 120, Sept 1, l995, ; 128+). Do you know of other
accounts that follow the practice over time to assess the
outcomes?
Thank you for the assistance.

Most of our collection management is centralised -- each of our 11
branches has a B&T rental account for which they are respectively
responsible.
Our branches (and budget) are too small for every branch to have a
copy of every title we own; with the exception of children's materials and
best sellers, we average about 2 copies per title. This demands a
centralised approach in order to "balance" especially the non-fiction
collection.

with a promise, p. 3
Some suggestions.
