POSITION: Collection Management Librarian for Social
and Behavioral Sciences
DESCRIPTION: Virginia Commonwealth University seeks an
energetic, knowledgeable, and forward-looking individual
to coordinate the selection of monograph, serial,
nonprint, and electronic materials in the social and
behavioral sciences. Areas of responsibility include
anthropology, education, political science, psychology,
public administration, social work, sociology, and other
related disciplines. Duties include 1) monitoring
budget allocations for assigned areas; 2) reviewing
approval materials, monitoring plans, and assisting in
preparing profiles; 3) evaluating gifts; 4) assessing
collection needs through formal evaluations; 5) making
preservation decisions; 6) collaborating with
librarians and faculty in developing collection goals,
policies, programs, and budgets; 7) preparing
accreditation reports and evaluating library support for
new courses and programs; and 8) working closely with
departmental faculty to identify priorities, coordinate
collection growth, and maintain effective communication.
Position may include providing information and
instructional services in the User Services division.
Position reports to the head of the Collection
Management Services.
QUALIFICATIONS: ALA accredited MLS required. The
following qualifications are preferred: academic
background in a social science discipline, with an
advanced degree strongly desired; two or more years
experience developing collections in a research library;
awareness of national trends in scholarly publishing;
knowledge of electronic resources in the social and
behavioral sciences; knowledge of approval plans;
ability to communicate a strong library image to
university faculty and administrators; experience with
library automation and technology applications in
academic libraries; strong service orientation and/or
public services experience; excellent oral and written
communication skills; positive interpersonal style;
ability to work independently as well as part of a team;
sensitivity to the concerns of a research library and
its users; initiative and creativity; strong analytical
skills; flexibility and the ability to accept and manage
change; ability to organize time and deliver work on
deadline; involvement in professional activities;
ability to meet requirements for faculty advancement,
including professional service and publication.
Experience working in a culturally diverse environment
highly preferred.
ENVIRONMENT: Virginia Commonwealth University is a
publicly-supported urban, research university in
Richmond, Virginia, serving approximately 22,000
students with 2,000 full-time faculty on both the
academic campus and at the Medical College of Virginia.
The University awards doctoral degrees in 20 fields, and
has recently established a School of Engineering. VCU is
a member of the Association of Southeast Research
Libraries, the Center for Research Libraries, and the
National Network of Libraries of Medicine. The Library
has over 1.1 million volumes, 10,000 current serials and
a materials budget in the current fiscal year of over
$4.5 million. The library is highly automated with 300
workstations, all NOTIS modules operational, centralized
access to over 100 databases and other electronic
resources, a growing presence on the Internet
(http://exlibris.uls.vcu.edu/uls.html), and active
leadership in the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA).
SALARY: $30,000 minimum with a competitive benefits
package including remuneration for University courses.
