In this exhibition catalog, Niles meditates on personal loss through an
exploration of landscape, drawing inspiration from the colorwork of both
contemporary painters like Kerry James Marshall and Richard Mayhew and Old
Masters like Caravaggio. In these new works, rendered in vibrant,
technicolor hues that construct a signature kind of chiaroscuro, Niles
finds himself immersed in nature—in the trees of a remote field, near the

Like younger painters, such as Cy Twombly and Robert Ryman, Resnick
worked in, through and beyond the language of NY gestural painting toward
an intimate relationship with mark-making, the surface, and the physical
matter of paint itself. Ultimately, the materiality of paint became
paramount, and Resnick's intent dissolution of form resulted in ever more
monochrome, thickly textured surfaces. The transition of Resnick's work
from more explicitly Abstract Expressionist modes to the monochrome
paintings of his later years was a result of the marked exploration
witnessed in this exhibition catalog.

The eighty-eight page full color catalogue documents the survey of
Mitchnick’s work organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. The
catalogue serves almost as a small retrospective, documenting a range of
Mitchnick’s work over the last thirty years. Including portraits, still
life, and landscape painting–this publication is a great example showing
how an artist’s work evolves over the course of their life.
