Welcome
Welcome to ACQNET-L
The purpose of this message is to give you some information about ACQNET-L.
ACQNET-L is a forum in which acquisitions librarians and others interested in acquisitions work for all material types may exchange information and ideas, and find solutions to common problems. It started with a group of 25 librarians in December, 1990 and as of March 2007 has over 2000 subscribers.
ACQNET-L is a moderated list. It uses the "Listproc" software platform. Messages are posted several times a month. Although you can subscribe and un-subscribe at will, you cannot contribute to the list directly. The editors receive all potential postings, and then they organize, edit, and distribute them to the subscribers. The editors summarize (i.e., post replies) when there are responses to a topic. You do not have to be subscribed to ACQNET-L to submit a posting, but your posting should be relevant to the aims of the list. COMMERCIAL POSTINGS ARE NOT ACCEPTED (see below for more information). If you wish to post to ACQNET-L, but are not a subscriber, please submit your posting directly to either the Chief Editor, Eleanor Cook at: cookei@appstate.edu or to Associate Editor for AcqFlashes, Rick Anderson at: rickand@unr.edu FOR INFORMATION ABOUT ACQFLASHES, SEE BELOW.

Editorial Policy
Scope
ACQNET subscribers discuss any topic within the main area of interest of the list: library acquisitions of all types of materials, and related subjects. Subscribers need to keep in mind other electronic discussion lists such as: AutoAcq-L, Liblicense-L, COLLDEV-L, SERIALST, VIDEOLIB, ERIL-L, and various integrated library system-related lists. Feature articles or reports should generally be submitted to _AGAINST THE GRAIN_ or other appropriate newsletters or journals.
ACQNET does not accept "want" lists or items to give away. Such lists may be sent instead to electronic lists that specialize in this sort of activity. These can be found through AcqWeb. This is an edited list. The editor(s) reserve the right to make all decisions regarding the posting of messages. Those that are judged to fall outside the scope of the list are returned to senders with an explanation for the rejection, or suggestions for re-submission. All messages not returned are posted. No anonymous messages are posted. Postings must be in the English language. The Editorial Board reserves the right to rule against any postings. Since ACQNET is an independent, non-profit entity, with no formal affiliation with any library organization, the only further appeal to a contested posting would be to the entire subscriber list, but this has rarely been requested.
Obligations Of Contributors
Contributors clearly understand the importance of assuring the accuracy of the information they include in their postings and their subsequent accountability to the group and the profession. The experiences of some of our colleagues in other venues suggest that this is essential, especially considering that the archives of this list are open for all to see. ACQNET-L archives are public and once a posting has been archived, it cannot be removed.
ACQNET promotes congenial and courteous scholarly discussion. Contributors may argue facts or opinions; however, personal attacks on other contributors or institutions will not intentionally be posted. "Flames" are not welcome.
Subscribers must remember that the over 2000 subscribers represent a wide range of locations, cultures, and levels of expertise. Message content and language should reflect an appreciation that what is being said, as it were, is spoken from a podium in front of a very large, very diverse group of people. For instance, humor is often interpreted differently than intended depending upon a person's cultural background or beliefs.
Submission Of Postings
Contributors who wish to communicate with the group should send a posting to the editors at: ACQNET-L@LISTPROC.APPSTATE.EDU. The editors request that a single message deal with a single question or issue, as it makes the job of editing and combining postings considerably easier. Please send replies to established threads to the above address, NOT to the editor's personal address, since editors take turns handling postings and all editors want to receive all messages. Contributors are asked to make sure that their name, as well as their email address appears in the "FROM" line of their postings, not just their e-mail address, or in the signature information if they sign their messages. Name, affiliation, and email address are preferred.
Please indicate the specific topic of the message on the "SUBJECT" line of the posting. Words such as "For ACQNET" or "RE: ACQNET 3:22" are not sufficient, and it is helpful to start the subject line with the statement "ACQNET:"
PLEASE DO NOT SEND attached files; all submissions should be sent as e-mail messages only. Contributions are accepted only when they are sent to ACQNET through the Internet.
Editing
ACQNET derives much of its appeal from the fact that it is current, allowing contributors to express concerns and opinions and get rapid feedback. Contributors are therefore advised that editing of the messages that they send is kept to a minimum. It is limited to looking for erroneous information, organizing the postings so that they are as easy to read as possible and fixing grossly incorrect usage of the language. Paragraphs with complete sentences are appreciated and the use of abbreviations and uncommon initials or jargon is discouraged.
The editors assume that information sent to
acqnet-l@listproc.appstate.edu
is meant to be redistributed to subscribers. Private communications to the Editor or others should not be sent to that address. Be aware that survey replies or other private communications that inadvertently come to ACQNET-L will not be redistributed, or forwarded.
Contributors are sometimes uncertain about whether they can name other parties, especially when they possess critical information about those parties. ACQNET policy is to print names and critical information that is factual and verifiable, but not to print derogatory or critical opinions that add nothing to the facts.
Commercial Messages
ACQNET does not accept commercial advertisements of any kind. Press releases from companies of interest to the subscribers may be sent to AcqWeb.
Copyright
The copyright of individual postings to and archived files of ACQNET are owned by individual authors. Use of the information posted in ACQNET for commercial purposes is prohibited except by written permission of individual contributors. Posting to ACQNET automatically grants the editor the right to use contributions in whole or in part in subsequent publications but only for non-commercial purposes.
Cross-Posting
Cross-posting from other lists is accepted when the content relates directly to the areas of interest to subscribers of ACQNET. It is the responsibility of contributors of a cross-post to obtain permission from the original author to post the message to ACQNET, and state that permission has been granted in the cross-post submission.
Disclaimer
Contents of all postings are the responsibility of the contributing authors and do not imply the endorsement of the editors, the editorial board, or Appalachian State University.
ACQflashes
ACQflashes are single-topic postings of a time-sensitive nature. They are archived for one year only. These are sent out more quickly than regular ACQNET postings. Items such as surveys, meeting announcements and job postings that have some aspect of acquisitions responsibility or would be of interest to the subscribers are sent out as ACQflashes. ACQflashes are sent out as soon as possible after receipt. If you are not a regular subscriber of ACQNET and wish to send a posting as an AcqFlash, please send it directly to either Rick Anderson at: rickand@unr.edu or to Eleanor Cook at: cookei@appstate.edu
Request that your posting be sent as an ACQflash if it is time-sensitive.
Archives
Official archives of the list are available via AcqWeb. These are maintained by Eric Lease Morgan. The archives are divided into three sections:
1990-July 2000 (When ACQNET-L was a digested newsletter with volume and issue numbering); postings from August 2000- which are chronologically arranged; and Acqflashes, which are also chronological and are kept for one year and then purged. A search engine is available from which one can search for specific topics or threads.
PLEASE NOTE: The ACQNET archives are publicly indexed and accessible on the Internet. Postings included in the archives are not meant to be removed or edited at a later time.
Relation To AcqWeb
ACQNET maintains an affiliation with AcqWeb, a web site developed by Anna Belle Leiserson. AcqWeb provides links to publisher and vendor home pages, and links to other resources of interest to acquisitions librarians. AcqWeb as of 200, is under complete revision, except for the ACQNET-L Archives section. AcqWeb's URL: www.acqweb.org
