Subject: Reminder! Upcoming Carterette Series Webinar on Responsibly Implementing AI: W, Oct 30
The Georgia Library Association Carterette Series Webinars presents…
Responsibly Implementing AI in Libraries and Archives: Introducing a Decision-Making Tool for Practitioners
Wednesday, October 30, 2024
2pm Eastern (11am Pacific | 12pm Mountain | 1pm Central)
Cost: Free
Description: Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used in libraries and archives as a powerful tool for enhancing metadata, improving search and discovery, recommending resources, powering library chatbots, and more. However, AI systems also have the potential to cause social and ethical problems. AI may incorporate surveillance technologies that threaten user privacy, AI can provide misinformation that looks real, and AI reflects and amplifies the biases of our society due to biased training data.
In response to these issues, the IMLS-funded Responsible AI in Libraries and Archives project has created a prototype tool that aims to guide practitioners through responsible implementation of AI. The prototype is based on new research conducted by the team, including a literature analysis, case studies, workshops with librarians and library users, and testing with library and archives practitioners. The tool takes the shape of a decision-making guide that incorporates LIS professional values such as Privacy and Consent, Resource Responsibility, Organizational Transparency, Literacy, and Access. The goal of the tool is to help practitioners implement AI in alignment with our professional values and reduce harm to our communities.
During this webinar, members of the project team will discuss research results and introduce the prototype Responsible AI tool. The final version of the tool will be released in 2025.
