The Georgia Library Association Carterette Series Webinars presents
Connecting with Teens Using Discord
Wednesday, December 6, 2023
2pm Eastern (11am Pacific | 12pm Mountain | 1pm Central)
Cost: Free
Description: Discord is a dynamic and powerful virtual platform that offers users the ability to communicate through voice calls, video calls, text messaging, media, files and more. It is a great tool for libraries to use to reach teens who are already online and who may not be able to visit the library. At the Salt Lake County Library in Utah, we've used Discord to help connect with teens in our community and help teens connect with each other. In this webinar, we will discuss how and why you should consider using Discord to expand library services for teens into the virtual world.
About the Presenters:
Cassie Leclair-Marzolf is a teen services librarian for the Salt Lake County Library. She has dedicated her career to convincing everyone in library land that teens are not scary gremlins, but are actually amazing humans that desperately need what libraries have to offer. She represented Utah libraries as a trainer with YALSA's Transforming Teen Services initiative. She has two cats, several cardigans, an extensive home library, and is at peace with fitting the librarian stereotype.
Mieke Nielson is a youth services librarian with the Salt Lake County Library. She has been very involved in the County Library's development of digital and virtual programs, helping to develop the County's Discord servers for teens and for Dungeons & Dragons. She also co-hosts the County Library's podcast, "Sounds from the Shelves." When not working, she enjoys cross stitching, cooking, and spending time with her son and husband.
