Hi, all,

We use Baker & Taylor for our leasing. We've been with them since 2013 and are very happy with them. Our contract calls for 300 books per year. Print only; no ebooks.

B&T has a Prepublication Title List that comes out every month (here's the most recent: http://www.baker-taylor.com/images/email/html/PrepublicationTitleList%20_feb20.html). I solicit all the library staff at all levels for recommendations; that way all staff feel they have a stake in it (also I don't have to do all the work). We end up with a pretty wide range of titles. It always surprises me what gets read and what doesn't. (E.g., people request diet books but then don't check them out.) As for marketing, they're on a special book shelf that makes them the first books people see when they come in the library; also, I highlight titles on the Acquisitions Department web page.

I started this shortly after I came here, so it's a project near and dear to me. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Lonnie

Michael,

Thanks for the question. It's one I've been thinking about.

We at TCNJ also use McNaughton, although at the lower level of about 200 titles. It is popular here as well, although much of the circulation occurs among library staff.

So let me add to your question: How do you make selection decisions? and do you market the collection? I select here mostly based on the "hot" titles listed in Bibz but I do monitor circulation and tweak my choices based on that. I find (for want of a better term) "chick lit" does very well while current events/political stuff does not. Frothy biographies of popular musicians and film stars also see good circulation. Our McNaughton books are shelved in a special area along side selected new titles for our regular collection. I have about four years of circulation data I'd be glad to share that includes borrower type (undergraduate, grad student, faculty).

Cheers!

Hi everyone!

The UConn Library maintains a leisure reading collection of 300 books, which circulate frequently and are a popular feature of the library. We lease our books through the McNaughton Lease subscription program<https://www.brodartbooks.com/library-services/collection-development/popular-title-subscriptions/mcnaughton-lease>. It works, but we’d like to learn what other libraries are doing.

How is YOUR library doing leisure reading? Are you purchasing titles outright? Are you working with a different vendor (not McNaughton or Brodart) to lease titles? Do you have an electronic component of leisure reading, such as Overdrive or RBDigital?

Thanks in advance for any information you can share!
