Kathy,

We are in a similar situation. We have 7 staff and 6 librarians when the positions are filled, but we have one vacant librarian position and a vacant Acquisitions staff position. I have a cataloging assistant and had an acquisitions assistant until June when that person retired. At first we weren’t going to be able to fill the position, but were then given an OK to advertise as part-time. We have had little interest in anyone applying for the part-time position, but did have one very good candidate who turned it down when we offered it to her to take a full-time position elsewhere. I am doing part of the job, my cataloging assistant is doing some, and a student worker is doing some. If the vacancy continues, I will have to assign more of the acquisitions duties to the student worker and the cataloging assistant so I can do other work. I agree with you that it doesn’t seem feasible to have a librarian take on these additional responsibilities or have a student worker spending library funds. I have a very responsible student worker right now for a few hours per week, but students come and go and we need more continuity in our Technical Services Department for those basic Acquisitions functions.

Subject: [ALCTS-acqnet] Question for small academic libraries

Dear colleagues,

We are a small (FTE 2000) liberal arts university with a Library staff (now) of about 14 (8 librarians, director, 5 staff,)plus 1 retiring acquisitons associate, 3 additional staff just let go, an admin shared with IT, and 4 Instructional Technology positions + 2 vacant IT positions under library director)

My question is- who performs your acquisitions functions? Administration has not approved replacing the retiring acquisitions person. She currently does firm orders, standing orders, streaming and physical media and gifts . Are there any libraries out there that do not have a staff acquisitions person? Do any have students performing these functions? We were hoping to at least get a part time position, but that will not happen either. It does not seem feasible to have either a full time librarian already responsible for electronic resources and collections perform these functions, or a student worker, who will be expending library funds. Our catalog associate, who could conceivably take it on, is already overburdened due to the fact that we have not had a cataloger for almost 2 years.
Thanks for the collective wisdom .

Kathy
