Hi Kathy,

We have about 1,800 FTE and have only 4 librarians (including the director)
and 3 staff. We have lost half of our professional and clerical staff due
to attrition and personnel budget cuts in the last 10 years.
The cataloging librarian (me) is also the acquisitions, systems, and web
services librarian. No staff assist with the acquisitions or systems work.
One staff member that provides circulation desk coverage for the night
shift assists with processing new books for shelving (labels, stamping,
etc.). In our library the librarians spend much of our time doing work that
could be done by staff if we had enough people. Our few clerical staff
spend their time covering the circulation desk with the assistance of
student workers (mostly grad students) as we have long operating hours most
days (open at 7am, close at midnight).
Good luck - I look forward to hearing from others to see how they manage
and how work is distributed at other institutions.

Cathy
