I agree, Brian. Our library organized its first exhibit of faculty publications in at least 10 years and had it in place last year from about May through September. We started asking for faculty members who had published to get in touch with us at least 6 months out, with reminders up until practically the day we began placing books in the exhibit case. I think we heard from at least as many faculty authors when the exhibit was in place as we did during the planning phase.

If we do more forward with a more formal way of tracking faculty publications, I think that I will ask for the “call for faculty authors” to come from the provost instead of me!

You would be surprised how many faculty do not respond to an email to get information about their books. We often hear from those up for tenure and some of the heaviest book disciplines (history, English, etc.), but many never respond. We have to do manual searching ourselves and leverage some strategies with our book vendors.

Thank you,
Brian

Dear colleagues,

UConn Library is planning a program to start systematically acquiring UConn faculty-published books (monographs) for inclusion in our collections. Does your library run such a program? How is it scoped, e.g., do you buy books where your faculty contributed only a chapter? How do you obtain lists of faculty-authored works? Any tech specs would be very helpful, if you’re willing to share.
